The best way to be accurate when sizing your finger is not to do it with string at home. You have free or very inexpensive options.

Option 1: Get your finger sized at any jeweller near you, go in, and ask them what your ring size is and they will be able to do it for you.

Option 2: Buy a ring sizer online. I would suggest the keying style ring sizers as they are most like rings, or you could get the tightening sizers which may be less expensive and smaller but they are less accurate.
